How often do you know exactly what you should do, yet fail to follow your own advice? I’ve been ignoring my own wisdom for over four years, but last week, I finally decided to take action. The subject? Delegation.
For years, I knew I needed help in various areas of my business. Yet, instead of outsourcing tasks to virtual assistants or specialists, I insisted on doing everything myself. At the time, it always seemed faster, easier and more cost-effective. But in hindsight, the true cost of resisting delegation has been far greater—impacting my time, energy, productivity and ultimately, profitability.
Last week, during my monthly mastermind session with a group of exceptional speakers, it became clear just how much I was holding myself back. When it was my turn to share during the hot seat, I outlined my intentions for the year. The feedback was unanimous: there was no way I could achieve these goals without help. My peers pointed out what I already knew deep down—I was still resisting the advice I give to others: delegate and outsource tasks that don’t require my direct involvement. Sometimes, even the most obvious solutions elude you.
The irony? In my own book, Focus on Why, I include an exercise called ‘You or Who?’ that emphasises identifying collaborators and delegating tasks outside your expertise. The goal is to free yourself to focus on your strengths, passions and unique gifts.
After the mastermind session, reflecting on this urgent need to delegate I took immediate action. I organised a call with a virtual assistant recommended by one of the mastermind members. During our two-hour mind-mapping session, we identified all the tasks I could offload on a daily, weekly and monthly basis as well as one-off projects that have been sitting on the back burner for far too long to her and another virtual assistant.
Taking this action has given me an incredible sense of liberation. Knowing I now have the support of two highly efficient assistants fills me with positivity and confidence. I can now see how 2025 will be filled with all the success I envision as I am focused on both collaboration and delegation.
Focus on Delegation. Focus on Why!
ACTION POINT: Before taking any action, think – you or who?
